KIA ORA AND WELCOME

Matamata Primary School is located in the heart of the Waikato, a town overlooked by the Kaimai Ranges and surrounded by rivers that flow through rolling green hills. Here we have created a nurturing environment that enables our children to learn and prosper across all aspects of education and development. Our guiding principles centre on our motto ‘Endeavour, Achieve Excel – Tohenga, Taea, Tino Hira. Together with support of our community and engagement of whanau, we deliver a platform that inspires learning to help build and shape our future generations.

Winter Illnesses and Staffing
24 Aug 2026

Dear MPS Families and School Community,

Update Regarding Winter Illnesses and Staffing:

As we move through the term, we are seeing a significant rise in winter illnesses across our school, particularly Influenza A. This is currently impacting a high number of both our students and staff.

How This Impacts Our Day-to-Day:

Many of our staff are currently away sick or at home caring for their own unwell children. Because relief teachers are also widely affected by these illnesses, securing cover has become increasingly difficult.

To ensure we maintain a safe environment with enough adults to supervise and care for our students, we are currently having to split some classes across syndicates. While our team is working hard to keep learning programs running as smoothly as possible, please be aware that this will cause some temporary disruption to normal classroom routines.

How You Can Help:

Keep unwell children home: Thank you to everyone who is keeping their children home when they show symptoms. This is vital to slowing the spread across the school.
Allow full recovery time: Please ensure your child is fully recovered and symptom-free before returning to school.

A Thank You to Our Community We fully understand the strain this creates for families. Juggling time off work and making last-minute childcare arrangements is challenging, and we deeply appreciate your effort as we work to protect the health and well-being of our entire school community.
Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and support as we navigate this stretch together. We hope to get through the worst of this season quickly and return to our normal routines soon.

Warm regards,

MPS team

DAFFODIL DAY 2026
23 Aug 2026

This Friday 28th August it is Daffodil Day and MPS will show our support!

We ask that our students come to school dressed in yellow/orange to show their support for those affected by cancer.

Each day 81 Kiwis hear the words ‘you have cancer’ - Daffodil Day is our chance to help!

If you are able to donate, we ask that our MPS students bring a gold coin to school on Friday where we will set up a designated ’donation spot’

The school office also has pins for $5, a small supply of Daffodil Day flowers for children to wear and some beautiful handmade bookmarks available for a donation.
