Over the past few months the Matamata Primary School PTA have been organising ‘Friendship Seats’ for our school to be placed in each area of our Junior, Middle and Senior playgrounds.

“We want everyone to enjoy school and have friends, so the seats are a point of contact for those looking for friends” said Rebecca Brophy Chairperson of the PTA.

The Cancer Foundation had been donated the seats and they were auctioning them off at their recent Charity Ball. Ms Brophy knew the organiser of the event and the PTA agreed at their last meeting to purchase the seats.  “So as well as having a positive place for our children to go, the money also went to a fantastic cause.” said Rebecca.

The ‘Friendship Seats’ are a place to go for students who are either struggling to find or make friends, whose friends are away or simply they just want to make new friends.  This will ensure that everyone has someone to play with or talk to during morning tea or lunch.

This week is the first week that the seats have been in the playground and the students are being educated around the use of these, in knowing that this is a positive place to go without being judged.
